📜 Scientific Society of Aligarh – A Historical Overview
✅ Establishment:
Year of Establishment: 1864
Place: Initially Ghazipur, but shifted to Aligarh in 1866
Founder: Sir Syed Ahmad Khan
Objective:
To promote scientific and modern knowledge in Urdu
To translate foreign (especially English) books into Urdu
To develop scientific thinking and reasoning among Indian Muslims
Also aimed to promote Hindu-Muslim unity through shared learning
🏛️ Full Name:
The Scientific Society of Aligarh (Originally known as the “Translation Society”)
📘 Initial Activities:
Translation of English and European books into Urdu
Organizing lectures and intellectual discussions
Publishing a journal – which later evolved into "Tehzeeb-ul-Akhlaq"
Issuing annual reports on scientific and social matters
Introducing modern subjects like science, economics, and social sciences to Indian Muslim society

The structure of the Scientific Society resembled that of modern academic institutions, with key leadership roles:

🧨 Dissolution (End of Active Functioning):
The Scientific Society was never formally dissolved, but:
After the establishment of the Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College) in 1875, the work of the Society was gradually absorbed into the College.
The Society’s intellectual mission merged with the academic culture of MAO College.
🧾 Legacy:
It was the first step of Sir Syed’s Aligarh Movement.
Introduced scientific discourse in Urdu.
Laid the foundation for modern education among Indian Muslims.
